Loud on a Budget: A Ported Bass Build

What you can skip

Telling you not to buy something is what makes the rest of this list worth reading. On this build, these are the things people add that are not earning their place.

  • A capacitor. At this power the big 3 upgrade on the list does far more for less.
  • A high output alternator, unless the lights still dim after the big 3.
  • A DSP. The factory head unit and the line output converter are the limit here, and a processor will not fix a source.

What to upgrade first

When the budget comes back around, this is the order that gets the most for the money.

  1. A second 12 before a second amplifier. Cone area is a cheaper decibel than watts.
  2. A second battery near the amplifier rack, if the voltage still sags after the big 3.
  3. Door speakers, because a ported 12 makes weak doors obvious.

Frequently asked questions

Is ported really louder than sealed?
Near the tuning frequency, yes, by roughly 3 decibels for the same power. That is the same increase you would get by doubling amplifier power, which is why a ported box is usually the cheaper route to output. Above tuning the difference narrows, and below tuning the ported box rolls off much faster and the cone unloads, which is why a subsonic filter is required.
Do I need a subsonic filter?
On any ported box, yes. Below the tuning frequency the port stops loading the cone, so excursion rises very quickly for very little acoustic output. A driver can be damaged by content you cannot hear. Set the subsonic filter just below the box tuning frequency, typically three to eight hertz below it, and leave it there.
Why 1/0 gauge for a 1,000 watt amplifier?
Because at roughly 87 amps of draw over a typical seventeen foot trunk run, 4 gauge loses more voltage than is sensible even though its ampacity is adequate. Voltage drop rather than ampacity is almost always the binding constraint at 12 volts. The wire gauge calculator shows the drop for every size at your own run length.
Will the big 3 upgrade actually stop my lights dimming?
Usually it helps substantially, because the factory cables were sized for the factory electrical load and their resistance is what turns a current demand into a voltage sag. It does not add supply. If the lights still dim after the big 3 and a clean ground, the alternator is genuinely the limit and a capacitor will not change that.

Researched guidance, not professional advice. A car battery will deliver several hundred amps into a short without any drama at all. Fit the main fuse within 18 inches of the battery positive terminal, because that fuse protects the wire and the wire is what starts a fire. Disconnect the battery negative before running power wire, fit a grommet anywhere a cable passes through sheet metal, and keep cables away from steering, airbag and moving components. Sustained high sound pressure causes permanent hearing damage.
