What you can skip
Telling you not to buy something is what makes the rest of this list worth reading. On this build, these are the things people add that are not earning their place.
- A capacitor. On a system this size the charging system is not the limit, and the money is better spent on the amplifier.
- A second battery, for the same reason.
- Sound deadening, for now. It is a real improvement and it is not what makes a first subwoofer work.
- Expensive speaker wire. Sixteen gauge is fine for the short run from the amplifier to a box in the trunk.
What to upgrade first
When the budget comes back around, this is the order that gets the most for the money.
- The big 3 upgrade, if the headlights dim. It costs less than a capacitor and it fixes the actual cause.
- Door speakers, once the bass is in. A subwoofer makes weak door speakers more obvious rather than less.

- Do I need to replace my factory head unit for this?
- No, and that is the point of the line output converter. It takes speaker level output from the factory radio, converts it to RCA line level and provides a remote turn-on signal so the amplifier knows when to switch on. Keeping the factory head unit also keeps steering wheel controls, chimes and any factory screen integration working, which an aftermarket unit often does not.
- Is 4 gauge wire enough for this system?
- For an 800 watt class D amplifier, yes on a typical run. That amplifier draws roughly 70 amps at rated output, and 4 gauge carries 85 amps at the published 75 C ampacity. On a very long run the voltage drop rather than the ampacity becomes the constraint, so check your own distance with the wire gauge calculator before ordering.
- Why sealed instead of ported for a first build?
- Because a sealed box is much more forgiving. If the internal volume is out by twenty percent, a sealed enclosure shifts its system Q slightly and still works. A ported box with the wrong volume or the wrong port length is tuned to a frequency you did not intend, which changes where it plays and where the cone unloads. Sealed is also smaller and easier to fit.
- How long does this install take?
- A first install usually takes a full day rather than an afternoon. Running power wire through the firewall and finding a good grommet is most of it, followed by locating a clean chassis ground. Setting the gain with a multimeter takes about five minutes at the end and is the step most worth not rushing.

Fit the main fuse within 18 inches of the battery positive terminal, because that fuse protects the wire and the wire is what starts a fire. Disconnect the battery negative before running power wire, fit a grommet anywhere a cable passes through sheet metal, and keep cables away from steering, airbag and moving components. Sustained high sound pressure causes permanent hearing damage.
